Why We’re Adding MagnaCut to Our Lineup
At New West KnifeWorks, steel is at the heart of everything we do. We don’t chase trends for the sake of it—we test, refine, and wait until a material proves it can deliver lasting performance in the kitchen and in the field. That’s why, after several years of evaluation, we’re excited to be making more knives in MagnaCut steel.
What Makes MagnaCut Special
MagnaCut was developed by metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas in partnership with Crucible Industries. His goal: to overcome one of the oldest balancing acts in knife making—the trade-off between stain resistance, toughness, and edge retention.
Traditionally, improving one meant compromising another. Japanese carbon steels, for example, hold an edge brilliantly but chip easily and require constant care. Stainless steels resist rust but can lack toughness.
MagnaCut changes that equation. As a powder metallurgy steel, it offers exceptional toughness and corrosion resistance without giving up edge retention. For chefs, hunters, and outdoor users, that means blades that are easier to maintain, more durable under stress, and capable of being ground thinner for razor-like cutting performance.

Why We Still Trust S35VN
Why We Still Trust S35VN
While MagnaCut is impressive, it doesn’t make our long-trusted CPM S35VN any less valuable. S35VN has been a cornerstone of our cutlery for years because it delivers an outstanding balance of edge retention, toughness, and stain resistance.
For most kitchens and most cooks, S35VN is more steel than you’ll ever need. It sharpens easily, resists corrosion well, and stands up to the wear-and-tear of daily cooking. We rarely see warranty issues with S35VN—it’s an excellent steel that continues to justify its place in our lineup.
In many ways, MagnaCut and S35VN sit side by side: both high-performance, American-made steels that elevate the knives we craft. MagnaCut simply gives us new possibilities in certain designs—especially for thinner grinds, outdoor knives, or blades used in harsher conditions.

What It Means for Our Knives
By using MagnaCut in select models, we can:
- Extend durability in tough conditions: Less risk of chips, breaks, or rust when hunting, fishing, or cooking outdoors.
- Reduce maintenance: Easier care, even in salty, acidic, or wet environments.
- Push performance further: Sharper, thinner grinds that still hold up over time.
Looking Ahead
MagnaCut is one of the best steels available today, and we’re proud to feature it in more of our lineup. But our work doesn’t stop here. New West KnifeWorks has always been committed to innovation—testing, experimenting, and embracing the steels that help us make the finest cutlery possible.
It’s not about declaring a “perfect” steel. It’s about matching the right steel to the right knife, and continuing to raise the bar so every blade we make is worthy of a lifetime in your hands.
